Internet and rural youth: connected for succession in the countryside

The data from the Continuous PNAD of IBGE, 2022 року, show a significant advance in internet access in recent years, mainly in the rural area. The percentage of people with internet access rose from 32% to 78%, between 2016 and 2022, a 144% increase. The growth in the number of people using the internet in rural households, since 2016, was more expressive in the South and Midwest, where the best "coverage rates" are also found: in these regions, only 15% of households did not have effective access to the internet due to the unavailability of the service in the area

In the tobacco sector, the numbers are even more significant. Pesquisa do CEPA/UFRGS, carried out in 2023, it was found that 92,1% of tobacco producers in the South Region of Brazil have access to the internet in their own home; і 1,6% have access to the Internet in a nearby location (association or club, for example. Access to the Internet enables tobacco producers to participate in various social networks. In the South Region, almost 95% of these producers participate in some social network: WhatsApp and Facebook are among the most used, with 98,9% and 84,6%. Both Instagram and YouTube are used by 37,8% and 24,1% of producers, respectively

Data indicates that internet usage has increased among Brazilian rural producers, but does this change the context of succession in the field? From the use of specific software and programs for property management to the use of new equipment or techniques that reduce production costs, the internet brings numerous conveniences, but it also makes the search for qualification and updates on new equipment and technologies available for the property even more important

More than connection, for rural youth to want to stay in the countryside they need qualification opportunities tailored to their reality. And this is the main objective of the Crescer Legal Institute, an initiative of the tobacco sector, that has offered income and professional training to rural adolescents, comment Iro Schünke, president director of the Institute

Founded in 2015, the Crescer Legal Institute has already been present in 20 municipalities in the South Region of Brazil, where were 54 classes of the Rural Professional Learning Program held. The innovative format, validated by the Ministry of Labour, use the law of learning. When using quotas from your associated and supporting companies, all industries in the tobacco sector, the Crescer Legal Institute provides to the children of rural producers, from 14 to 17 years old, the hiring of young apprentices to attend the Entrepreneurship and Rural Management course in the school shift, ensuring they stay away from age-inappropriate activities

Michele de Cássia Dzindzny, social educator of the Rural Professional Learning Program of the Crescer Legal Institute from the class of São João do Triunfo (PR), it tells how the interaction with the learners and the identification with their realities have been inspiring."Through the course, the apprentices have the opportunity to share their experiences and think about improvements. We can see the pride they feel in talking about their communities, the respect for agriculture and show to notice the opportunities that the rural environment offers. For us, a small municipality that has agriculture as its mainstay, mainly through tobacco culture, The Institute means new opportunities for the rural youth, comment
